Race refers to a human group that is distinguished by physical differences, such as skin color or facial features, and is classified from outside, not individuals. It affects social identity and affects the position in the social hierarchy. Ethnicity is associated with race, but it represents a shared social trait, not a physical one. The history of racial classification dates back to the ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman periods, and there have been attempts to classify it scientifically since the 17th century. 19th-century natural scientists claimed that race was an objective and naturally occurring division. Darwin's theory of evolution and Mendel's genetics raised questions about this essentialist approach. The understanding that race is a social construct means that it is a human-made distinction, not the natural world. Examples in the United States and Brazil show that race is socially constructed.

Genetic studies show that self-described race is a good indicator of genetic profile, but this may vary depending on the researcher's prior decision. Some studies show that genetic variation within race is greater than that between races. Consideration of race in biomedical research is important to improve disease prevention and treatment. Although differences in race and disease sensitivity exist, there is also a risk of scientific racism. The case of BiDil drugs shows that studies of specific race groups may be beneficial in treating the disease. Public health interventions using race patterns are necessary to close health gaps. Race concepts are complex and controversial, but it is important to understand and use them appropriately.

2. What did I learn

Through this article, I was able to gain a deeper understanding of the concepts of race and ethnicity and their differences. It was emphasized that race is mainly an external classification based on physical differences, while ethnicity is centered around a shared social characteristic. In addition, through the historical background of race classification and the transformation of scientific attempts, we learned how the concept of race has changed and become controversial over time. Understanding race as a social construct provides important insights that race is not natural. Although genetic research shows the relationship between race and genes, it can vary depending on the researcher's prior decision, which requires careful interpretation. Consideration of race in biomedical research is helpful in preventing and treating diseases, but we also have to be wary of the risk of racial discrimination. All of these factors show that race concepts are complex and multi-layered, and we have learned that it is important to understand and use them properly.

Is the use of race classification in modern biomedical research and public health policy essential to scientific progress, or does it pose an ethical dilemma?"

  1. Race classification will lead to ethical dilemmas unless it is a search for race. Even in modern times, race does not seem to show any difference from country to country. Since a multicultural society has arrived and the boundaries of each country have become ambiguous, researching and dividing it by race seems to be only discrimination.
