1. Summary
I have read materials that describe the relevance of race and ethnicity to sociology. Race is a group of human beings that are believed to be distinct from other humans in some way based on physical differences, real or imagined. Race classification is rooted in the idea of biologically classifying humans based on their morphological characteristics, such as skin color or facial features. Instead of choosing where they belong as part of their identity, individuals are generally classified as externally racial groups. The concept of race as well as certain ethnic groups is often controversial because of their impact on social identity and how this identity affects someone's place in the social class. Ethnicity refers to social characteristics that are related to race but are shared by mankind, not physical characteristics. Unlike race, ethnicity is generally not externally specified by other individuals. The term ethnicity puts more emphasis on the group's connection to the perceived shared past and culture.
2. What I learned
Debate over how to understand race continues within the discipline. Some sociologists and biologists believe that race is a social construct. In other words, race is not based on the natural world but simply an artificial distinction created by humans. As a result of this understanding, some researchers have shifted from conceptualizing and analyzing human variations according to race to doing so in terms of population, completely ignoring race classification. With the growing rejection of race as a valid taxonomy, many social scientists have replaced the word race with the word ethnicity, referring to self-identification groups based on a shared religion, nationality, or culture.
3. Question
What is the difference between race and ethnicity in your opinion?
In my opinion, the key difference between race and ethnicity lies in their basis of classification and the factors they encompass. Race tends to focus on physical attributes and is often used to categorize people into broad groups based on superficial characteristics. Ethnicity, on the other hand, delves deeper into cultural, social, and historical factors, reflecting a shared sense of identity and belonging among individuals who identify with the same ethnic group.
