[kanghyeon Choi 최강현] D) Science & Futurism with Isaac Arthur (Economies of the Future)

 1) What was surprising or interesting in the video?

Even if the limitless advancement of technology could make humanity the best it can be, a perfect utopia is realistically impossible. If everyone were to have the intelligence level of Einstein, that uniqueness would vanish. Similarly, if advanced plastic surgery allowed everyone to have perfect appearances, people might start desiring slight imperfections instead. This is because humans inherently seek differentiation.

Additionally, despite the infinite advancement of technology, resources remain finite. Bandwidth, energy, and time are resources that cannot be provided infinitely. Efficient management and distribution of these resources still require an economic system. Therefore, even if we invent a perfect ideal system, controlling it without any intermediary is challenging.

In future societies, there is also the possibility of introducing social currency systems. These systems measure and exchange reputation, trust, and social contributions. They could create a new form of economic structure that values social factors alongside economic value. However, even if we invent a perfect ideal system, the inherent diversity and unpredictability of humans, along with technological limitations, make complete control practically impossible.

Ultimately, the future economy will be shaped by human desires and goals. What people want, what they aim for, and how they interact with others will determine the future economy. These points provide intriguing insights into how future economies and societies might evolve. They also show that alongside the imagination of how technological advancements will change human society, a deep understanding of human nature is essential.

2) What is the main topic of the video, and what do you think about it?

The theme of this episode is to explore the future of economies. It considers various scenarios from dystopian to utopian, and from ultra-scarcity to post-scarcity. The discussion delves deeply into how technological advancements could potentially impact economic systems and human behavior, covering topics such as extended lifespans, medical nanobots, automated manufacturing, and advanced civilizations.

3) How does the topic of this video tie to what we have been discussing in class?

Marxist communism focuses on social ownership and distribution of the means of production, aiming for a society where individuals freely engage in labor and resources are distributed fairly. In contrast, the concept of a post-scarcity society discussed in this episode explores the potential of technological advancement and automation to fulfill all basic needs. While Marx recognized the potential benefits of a post-scarcity society, his design of communism emphasizes autonomous and liberated labor. However, there are several key differences between these two concepts. A post-scarcity society may emphasize how technological advancement and automation can increase economic abundance, potentially overlooking the importance of autonomous and liberated labor as envisioned in communism. Additionally, while communism centers around social ownership and distribution of the means of production, a post-scarcity society may still advocate for the necessity of currency or exchange systems despite infinite resources and advanced automation. Lastly, communism aims for human freedom and communal welfare, whereas a post-scarcity society may highlight the need to be cautious of the potential negative impacts of technological advancement and societal changes on human psychology and social structures.
