[Extra Credit] Channel A - HUANGQIHAO
1) What was surprising or interesting about the video?
Interestingly, the shape of Chinese characters is derived from the forms of objects and creatures in nature. Surprisingly, this ideographic system is not only effective in ancient times, but also clearly conveys information in modern times.
2) What is the theme of the video and what do you think?
The video introduces the construction principle and evolution of Chinese characters. The construction of Chinese characters can be divided into three main methods: pictographic, perceptual and phonological. Hieroglyphics represent meaning by describing the shape of an object; Ideographs convey new meanings by combining multiple hieroglyphs; Phonograms combine form and sound to convey meaning and prompt pronunciation. I think this writing system is very unique and shows the high creativity and wisdom of ancient Chinese people.
3) How does the topic of this video relate to what we are discussing in class?
While watching this video, I was reminded of the topic of linguistic evolution that we discussed in class. Understanding the origin and evolution of Chinese characters not only leads to a better understanding of the structure of modern Chinese, but also to new insights into the development of other languages. It also made me realize how language changes and ADAPTS over time.
