How to be a better public speaker | Lawrence Bernstein | TEDxRoyal Holloway (youtube.com)

1. What was surprising or interesting in the video?

Bernstein addresses the common fear of public speaking, noting that it triggers a fight or flight response, which can cause people to speak too quickly or freeze up. To combat this, he suggests focusing on the relevance and benefits of the message rather than just technical details. This approach can help maintain the speaker's natural charisma and ensure the audience finds the presentation engaging and meaningful. I was surprised by the emphasis on the relevance of the message rather than the technical aspects when giving public speeches. Like most people, I find speaking in front of an audience incredibly challenging. I've always tried to find the skillful aspects, but in the video, I gain courage from the advice to focus more on delivering the intended message.

2. What is the main topic of the video, and what do you think about it?

In his talk, Bernstein emphasizes the importance of storytelling as a key technique for engaging an audience. He explains that storytelling can make complex subjects more relatable and memorable, helping speakers connect with their audience on an emotional level. My thoughts on this are written together in the answer to No.1.

3. How does the topic of this video tie to what we have been discussing in class?"

There may be students like me who are reluctant to speak in front of audiences. Watching this video may resolve some of those concerns to a certain extent, but public speaking can still be challenging for some. In that case, are there any other ways to overcome the fear of public speaking?
