[extra credit] B) Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell (Loneliness)

1) What was surprising or interesting in the video?

It's really interesting that loneliness strengthens defense mechanisms. But why was it naturally chosen that loneliness strengthens defense mechanisms? I think we can agree that fostering defense mechanisms and being isolated from society is rather a struggle to dispel that loneliness. These days, I also seem to try to avoid loneliness often. Knowing too much about yourself lacking social skills and preventing social relationships from forming in the first place is a very easy way to avoid real-life tragedies. But my question is, why were people like me chosen naturally? Is it because giving up social relationships and growing pessimism and hostility strengthened our ancestors' independence and viability?

2) What is the main topic of the video, and what do you think about it?

Humans are inherently lonely. Such suffering stimulated our ancestors' survival, and they were able to thrive under it. However, the prevalent selfish, anti-rational practices of totalitarian and ethnocentristic ideas and ideas that were practiced for a long time were sufficient to enlighten individualism. The authoritarian system of Roman Catholicism was indeed problematic. They needed a balance between the whole and the individual. But is modern society actually balanced well? It is said that an unprecedented number of people feel lonely in this era. Does the concept of loneliness know how to feel? The video says that the remarkable development of civilization has made it easy for us to live individually. YouTube, Netflix, PlayStation, and so on have ways to escape from loneliness without having to suffer from socialization. I think it's kind of like a cycle. Loneliness has created civilization, and civilization has created loneliness.

3) How does the topic of this video tie to what we have been discussing in class?

Understanding the differences between psychology and sociology will allow a clearer analysis of individual loneliness and resulting collective changes. Group development has brought economic and technological achievements, but it has also led to social changes that can increase loneliness. From a sociological point of view, the ways in which individual loneliness causes collective change are complex, which can take many forms, including a decrease in social trust and cohesion, political instability, health problems, and social innovation. These analyses provide important insights in how we address loneliness issues and build better communities in modern society.
