What was surprising or interesting about the video?

Surprisingly, this video delves into how life extension technology would have influenced our traditional relationships if it had existed 150 years ago. It's intriguing to consider that if we stopped worrying about retirement, our lifestyles and social structures would undergo significant changes. The population increase would bring about various issues, such as resource allocation and environmental pressure.

The theme of the video and my thoughts

The central theme of this video is "the ethics of life extension." The development of life-extending technologies is not only ethically controversial, but these medical procedures also often lead to inequalities. Should humans deliberately extend the lifespan granted by nature? This question touches on the delicate balance between humanity and civilization in the universe. While extending life might seem beneficial on an individual level—living to 150 instead of 100—from a societal perspective, it poses challenges. If life expectancy is extended during a period of low birth rates, it will increase the proportion of elderly people and lead to overpopulation. Limited resources would mean that only a small number of wealthy individuals could afford life-extending surgeries, concentrating privilege and exacerbating social inequality.

The connection between this video and the class

Life extension technology raises issues of inequality in wealth and status, linked to social inequality and conflict. It also addresses the societal impact of technological advancements, particularly how to handle the ethical and social issues that arise from such progress. This is closely related to our class discussions on how to manage the effects of technology on social structures and ethical norms.
