1. Summary: Social inequality occurs as a result of uneven distribution of resources within society, creating an unequal pattern. In societies where members occupy few social roles and positions, social inequality can be very low. This culture is in contrast to a materially oriented culture that values status and wealth and causes conflict.
Status in society is divided into characteristics and achieved characteristics. Ascribed traits are traits that exist at birth and cannot be controlled by others. Accomplished characteristics are characteristics that a person acquires as he or she lives. An individual's social status is often a combination of attribution and achievement factors. Modern Western society is usually divided into upper class, middle class, and lower class. Boxweber used social class to examine wealth and status. The quantitative variables most often used as indicators of social inequality are income and wealth. If this is expressed as an objective indicator, it can be expressed as the gross domestic production index or Gini coefficient. Examples of social inequality include gender inequality, racial and ethnic inequality, age inequality, and health inequality.
2. What was interesting/what did you learn:
I had studied the Gini coefficient intensively through a core class called Statistics and Society. It was interesting that inequality could be expressed with the Gini coefficient, and I think this is an example of how sociology can be analyzed scientifically.
3. Discussion Point:
After the coronavirus pandemic, people's awareness of health inequality has increased. As the information society developed, the term information inequality arose, and people experienced inequality in access to information, which led to social problems. What new inequalities will appear in society in the future?
Inequality due to technological differences will arise. Advances in artificial intelligence can provide many opportunities for those who are good enough with information, but for the unskilled, it can lead to job losses. This can lead to a wage gap. This inequality will become more pronounced in the technologically advanced countries.
ReplyDeleteIn the future, digital inequality will likely become more pronounced, with disparities in access to advanced technologies like AI and high-speed internet deepening social divides. Climate inequality will emerge as those with fewer resources are less able to protect themselves from and adapt to environmental changes and disasters. Health tech inequality will grow, with unequal access to cutting-edge medical treatments and personalized healthcare technologies. Finally, educational inequality will expand as access to quality online learning resources and technological tools becomes increasingly crucial for success in a digital world.
