W12.1 May 20 (Mon) Assignment - Lee Sihoon

 1. summarize

Dramaturgy in sociology, developed by Erving Goffman, uses theatrical metaphors to describe social interactions. It suggests individuals perform roles based on cultural norms to manage impressions. Key concepts include "front stage" (public behavior), "back stage" (private behavior), and "impression management" (controlling how others perceive us). Goffman's theory emphasizes that identity is a dynamic construct, shaped through interactions. The theory highlights how people present themselves differently depending on their audience and context.

2. interesting point

While reading dramaturgy theory, I found the idea of social interactions unfolding like a theater stage very interesting. This theory helps explain how people present themselves in social situations and manage the perceptions of others. It has helped me to better understand the complexity and subtlety of everyday interactions.

I was particularly impressed with the “front stage” and “back stage” concepts. The idea that people play certain roles in public, but are more authentic in private, fits with many real-life situations. The concept of “impression management” also gave me insight into how people want to be seen by others.

3. some questions

How do dramaturgy and symbolic interactionism connect?

What are some jobs or situations where “impression management” is important?

Comments

  1. Politicians and those providing public services must manage impressions to gain public support and trust. Their actions and statements greatly influence the public's impression of them, so it is important to convey a positive and trustworthy impression.
