1. Summary

I read a material that describes symbolic interactions. Symbolic interactionism is a sociological theory that develops from practical considerations and implies the use of shared language by humans to generate common symbols and meanings for use in personal and interpersonal communication. According to Macionis, symbolic interactionism is "a framework for theory building that sees society as the product of individual daily interactions." In other words, it is a frame of reference for better understanding how individuals interact with each other to create a symbolic world, and in return, how these worlds shape individual behavior. It is a framework that helps us understand how society is preserved and created through iterative interactions between individuals. The process of interpretation that occurs between interactions helps create and recreate meaning. It is a shared understanding and interpretation of meaning that affects the interactions between individuals. Individuals act on the premise of a shared understanding of meaning within their social context. Thus, interactions and actions are constructed through the shared meaning that objects and concepts give them. From this perspective, people live in both natural and symbolic environments.

2. What I learned

Symbolic interactions were devised by George Herbert Mead and Charles Horton-Cooley. Mead argued that people's egos are social products, but these egos are purposeful and creative as well, and he believed that the true test of all theories was that it was "useful for solving complex social problems." The Mind, Self, and Society is a book published by his students based on Mead's lectures and teachings, and the title of the book emphasizes the core concepts of social interactionism. The mind refers to the individual's ability to create meaning about the world around the individual by using symbols, the individual's language and thoughts, and the ego to achieve this goal. According to Mead, society is where all of these interactions take place.

3. Question

Symbolic interactionists are often criticized for being overly impressionistic in their research methods and for the theory to be rather unsystematic. A theory is claimed not to be a single theory but rather a framework for various theories. Also, some theorists have problems with symbolic interaction theories because of their lack of testability. However, I think society is formed by individual interaction influences.

Do you accept sangsingular interaction as a theory?

Comments

  1. I also accept symbolic interaction as a theory because I think society is formed by individual interaction.
