1. Summary
Symbolic interactionism theory is a sociological theory that focuses on
the processes by which people interact and communicate through signs (e.g.,
language, gestures, symbols, etc.). This theory suggests that social reality is
constructed through the meaning that people give to symbols in their
interactions. Symbolic interactionism was originally developed by George
Herbert Mead and his student Herbert Blumer.
2. Interesting points
While symbolic interactionism has helped people understand society. But
it also some disadvantages and limitations. Symbolic interactionism emphasizes
specific interactions and individual behaviours in everyday life and ignores
the influence of macro-social structures and institutions. Moreover, the
explanatory power of symbolic interactionism focuses mainly on social
interaction and the formation of self-concept, and is weaker for explanations
involving large-scale social change, structural inequality and macro-social
problems.
3. Questions
How do you think Symbolic interactionism theory can help us in our lives
and majors?
In real life, symbolic interactionism is really helpful in areas such as education, psychotherapy and marketing. For example, teaching methods can be improved by understanding how students interact with each other. In psychotherapy, people can be helped to understand themselves by analyzing interpersonal interactions. But then this theory is still relatively little in solving some social problems and policy making. Therefore, I think we can use it together with other theories to deal with these social problems.
