 1. Summary

Symbolic interactionism is a sociological theory that explains the process by which people communicate with each other through symbols and meanings and create social reality through them. The main content is that repetitive interactions form and maintain society, mainly using qualitative research methods such as participatory observation. Some social theorists have criticized that symbolic interactionism is too subjective in research methods, the theory is not systematic, and lacks testability.


2. Mention of any new, interesting

It was interesting that the perspective of symbolic interaction could be applied to how individual identity is expressed on social networking sites. This is because tagging others, which was usually done without thinking, could be newly interpreted as a way to strengthen social relationships and a sense of belonging through digital media. Through this, I came to understand the way digital media builds social identity.


3. Discussion

It is said that symbolic interactions help express an individual's identity within a social network, so if so, how will an individual's identity change if they temporarily stop using social media?
