 1) Summary

Social networks are social structures made up of relationships and interactions between social actors, such as individuals or organizations. Social network analysis is one of the important paradigms in modern sociology, which forms part of network science. Networks understand social phenomena through the properties of relationships, and these approaches are used in various fields, such as social sciences, biology, and economics.

Social network research is divided into micro, intermediate, and macro levels. The micro-level deals with individuals and their relationships, the intermediate level deals with relationships within organizations, and the macro-level deals with interactions between large populations. Networks have self-organizing, emergent, and complex patterns, and are analyzed at different scales depending on the theoretical questions of the study.

Structural hole theory refers to the gap between two separate clusters with non-overlapping information within a network. The networks connecting these structural holes form social capital by providing information, opportunities, and perspective advantages. 

Social network analysis plays an important role in understanding the complexity of human relationships and organizations through various theories and applications, including art networks, communications, communities, demographics, economic sociology, human ecology, and social media, thereby drawing practical benefits.


2) Something interesting or new that I learned

Looking at the research cluster part, I was surprised that there could be such various studies on social networks at each level. It was interesting to see how social networks were used in advertising and criminal networks. Especially, it was interesting to analyze crimes such as murder in terms of social relations with groups beyond individual faults, such as seeing them as a series of exchanges between gangs, not in the way I usually thought.


3) Questions & Discussions

Which research area is the most meaningful application of social network analysis? In my opinion, social network analysis is likely to work very meaningfully in all communication-related studies. Various communications and exchanges between people form and result from social networks, and they also spread them.
