W 11.2(Haein Lee, 이해인)

 1.

Symbolic interactionism refers to a sociological theory that explains the effects of people's communication and interaction, or creates images of interaction. Symbolic interactionism is particularly important and widely used in microcosmology. As a result, symbolic interactionism is a theory that depends on how people interpret a meaning in society and in what way.
Symbolic interactionism was initiated by George Herbert Meade and Charles Horton-Cooley (which we commonly call coolie). Among them, Herbert Meade argued that although people themselves are social products, they themselves have a sense of purpose and are creative, and believed that true testing was useful for solving complex social problems regardless of theory. His influence is so powerful among sociologists that he is considered to be the 'real founder' of the symbolic interactionist tradition.
2.
I learned about this symbolic interactionism in high school along with the important functional theory and conflict theory in social theory. In high school, I did not know the sociologists who represented each theory and the founder of it, but I learned more about it in this "Introduction to Information Sociology" class, and I thought it was meaningful and interesting to know more accurate and detailed definitions of symbolic interactionism and the sociologist who started it together through this article.
3.
Let's talk about an example where symbolic interactionism is applied, and let's talk about where we think that case is applied.

  1. An example of the application of symbolic interaction theory is social media platforms. The various symbols and meanings used in social media are formed through interactions between individuals. For example, on Facebook, a 'like' button can mean not just expressing positive feedback, but also being socially accepted and acknowledged. Symbolic interaction theory provides a useful theoretical framework for understanding interactions and meaning formation on these social media platforms.

  2. Your post on symbolic interactionism provides a clear overview of its origins and significance, particularly highlighting George Herbert Mead and Charles Horton Cooley as pivotal figures. It's great that you found a deeper understanding of symbolic interactionism through your sociology class, especially in contrast to what you learned in high school.

To further enrich your exploration, consider discussing a specific example where symbolic interactionism is applied in contemporary society. For instance, you could analyze how social media platforms facilitate self-presentation and identity construction based on interactions and symbols. Exploring such examples could illustrate the practical relevance of symbolic interactionism in today's interconnected world.
