 1. Summary

This chapter deals with symbolic interactionism.
From Burbank's and Goffman's perspectives, it is explained that symbolic interactionism focuses on human meaning-giving and interaction, through which social structures are formed. It emphasizes that language and thinking give meaning through symbols, communication takes place, and social reality is built through this. However, this perspective has been criticized for the lack of close investigation into participants' emotional fluctuations and psychological processing. Recognizing these limitations, the understanding of symbolic interactionism can be more in-depth, taking into account biases related to the social composition of individuals.
Symbolic interactionism plays an important role in explaining an individual's identity. An individual's established identity is formed through the process of differentiating oneself and connecting with others. This can be seen through activities on social networking sites. Research by Bruce Link and colleagues showed that expectations for the reactions of others are related to internalized stigma. These expectations are related to the concern about rejection, which can have negative consequences related to an individual's quality of life.

2. What's interesting
It was most interesting to show a critical point of view.
First, it is interesting that Striker emphasizes interactionism as the most practical and vibrant intellectual framework in sociology. This suggests that interactionism occupies an important place in sociological research. It emphasizes the importance of interaction in understanding and explaining social phenomena, and shows interest in how interactions work in various social situations. In addition, a criticism of symbolic interactionism is also raised in this part. In particular, it is pointed out that this theory has limitations in explaining social structure and does not fully consider the psychological aspects of interactions. This suggests that a complementary approach is needed to recognize and overcome the limitations of the theory.

3. discussion
Symbolic interactionists are often criticized for their research methods being overly impressionistic and their theories being rather disorganized. Is there a solution to address this?

Comments

  1. To minimise this, symbolic interactionists ensure that research questions and hypotheses are clear and unambiguous, avoiding vague and ambiguous statements. This helps to ensure that the purpose and direction of the research is clear and avoids confusion and digression during the research process. In addition symbolic interactionists should engage in open-ended discussions and critical reflections, accept different views and criticisms, and constantly revise and improve their theories and research methods. This will help to improve the quality and level of academic research and promote communication and co-operation in the academic community.

  2. Although there are advantages to the theory of symbolic interactionism, it is also criticized for being too impressionistic. In order to solve this problem, I think the experimental results should be used as a solid basis. In addition, it is necessary to strive for a more systematic approach by adopting a variety of research methods, not just one research method.
Another way is to promote interaction with other fields by utilizing integration, which is the advantage of symbolic interactionism theory.

  3. Your insights into symbolic interactionism were thought-provoking, especially how you addressed its strengths and criticisms. To improve its research methods criticized as overly impressionistic, researchers could consider integrating more rigorous qualitative approaches like structured interviews or systematic observations. Additionally, adopting complementary theoretical perspectives could provide a more holistic understanding of social dynamics while still benefiting from symbolic interactionism's insights.
