[W7.2] Economic sociology & Socioeconomics - Shim ChaeYeon(심채연)

 1) Summary

Economic sociology

Economic sociology is the study of social causes and consequences of various economic phenomena. It can be divided into the classical and modern eras, and the classical era was interested in rationalization, secularization, urbanization, and social stratification.

Modern economic sociology studies the social outcomes and meanings of economic exchange and social interactions. Modern economic sociology is a study that combines the analysis of economic phenomena by sociologists and the approaches of economists to social situations. The main theories of modern economic sociology include social network analysis, the theory of the strength of weak bonds, and the concept of structural holes.

Economic sociology is also synonymous with socioeconomics, and there are various academic societies.

Socioeconomics

Socioeconomics is a social science that studies how economic activities affect and form social processes. It analyzes how modern society develops, stagnates, or degenerates due to the local economy or the global economy. "Socioeconomics" can be used as a term encompassing various fields of inquiry and considers the behavioral interactions between individuals and groups through social capital, social markets, and the formation of social norms.

Socioeconomics also studies the impact of socioeconomic systems at the local level, such as deforestation, pollution, natural disasters, and energy consumption, on communities and families. These factors show that humans and natural systems are integrated systems, and depending on government policies and situational factors, they can have a more negative impact on the environment.

 2) Something interesting or new that I learned

The difference between economic sociology and socioeconomics was interesting. The two concepts seem very similar when they hear their names, but they are different in important ways. Economic sociology studies social causes and effects in economic phenomena, and socioeconomics studies economic activities that affect and form social processes. Through the document, I was able to understand what each discipline deals with.

 3) Questions & Discussions

This socioeconomic document says that in the past, large families were often banned at home due to direct energy consumption increase, but this is a strange story from a Korean point of view. In the case of Korea, there were many large families in the past, which was recommended because it helped with productivity. However, with increasing urbanization and modernization over time, the number of nuclear families has increased. Like this, how about analyzing socioeconomic factors such as deforestation, pollution, natural disasters, and furniture according to your country?
