1) Summary
Religious sociology, as the study of religious beliefs, practices, and organizational forms, uses the tools and methods of sociology. It examines religion objectively using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. This field has been developed from the study of suicide rates by Émile Durkheim, who formed the beginning of modern sociology. Durkheim's research has contributed to distinguishing sociology from other fields through religious analysis. The works of Karl Marx and Max Weber emphasized the relationship between religion and the economic and social structures of society. Modern religious sociology focuses on discussions about religion and secularization, civic religion, and the cohesion of religions, in the context of globalization and multiculturalism. Religious sociology does not evaluate the validity of religious beliefs and distinguishes it from religious philosophy. Religious sociology, while being indifferent to the supernatural aspects, acknowledge the socio-cultural aspects of religious practice. Religious sociology may require "methodological atheism" in the process of comparing conflicting doctrines of religions. Religious sociology also contributes to understanding the role and function of religions, while exploring various aspects of religion scientifically and theoretically.
