W5.1 April 1 (Mon) - 김명준 Myeongjun Kim

1) Summary

Sociologists' primary goal is to understand religion by studying it. However, efforts to predict what religion will do in the future are also included. To do this, we use a variety of methodological approaches, taking a neutral position rather than judging whether a religion is right or wrong. The study of religion can provide an alternative and naturalistic explanation for many aspects of religion, which can lead to difficulties from a religious perspective. In addition, the article explains the structural functions of religious theories, such as social cohesion, social control, and providing meaning and purpose, and explains various theories, such as social conflict approaches, social constructivist approaches, and religious pluralism.

2) Interesting points/studies

One of the interesting things is that the study of religion is done through various theoretical approaches. Sociologists analyze structural functions, such as social cohesion, social control, and providing meaning and purpose, in order to understand and predict religion. These theories emphasize that religion has a role to play in maintaining social solidarity and presenting ethical norms.

3) Questions or points to discuss

If religion is a social construct, will it affect their beliefs?
