W2.2 weekly blog for reading material:

  1. 1.Summary In this chapter, the author discusses the differing perceptions of social phenomena between sociologists and the general public. Sociologists often summarize and generalize social knowledge to develop a holistic and logical understanding. For example, they attribute various methods of acquiring new knowledge to cognitive theory and derive patterns from it.

Additionally, the author systematically introduces us to the research methods and steps of sociology, as well as the impact of sociological research on society. The results of sociological research directly influence social development, while the research process indirectly affects the experimental subjects—observed humans—and this influence can be amplified, impacting human society.

  1. 2.Interesting points

Moral principles play a crucial role in sociological experiments. Sociologists must disclose the funding sources of their laboratories to enhance the social credibility of their experimental results. They must also adhere to universally recognized moral principles in human society and ensure that experimental subjects are not harmed during the experimental process.

  2. 3.Discussion

The methods used in studying sociology significantly influence the formation and development of the discipline. However, before the explicit proposal of sociology as a concept, the practice of organizing social knowledge into summary concepts already existed. Therefore, the relationship between the methods of studying sociology and sociology itself is interdependent. The question then arises: how do we determine which holds the dominant position in this relationship?

Comments

  1. The question of who dominates in the relationship between sociological research methods and sociology itself is indeed complex. I believe that sociological research methods and sociology itself exist interdependently, and that there is no single dominant position. Research methods provide tools and frameworks that contribute to the understanding of social phenomena. The goals and characteristics of sociology determine the appropriate choice of methods. They influence each other, and together, they contribute to the development of sociology.

  2. Sociological research methods contribute to the development of sociological knowledge, and at the same time, sociological knowledge influences the choice of research methods. Therefore, I think that there is a continuous interactive relationship between the two and it is difficult to say which one is dominant.
