1. summary

Deviation is an act that violates cultural norms and is divided into formal and informal deviations. Since cultural norms are relative, the standard of deviation varies according to the culture. Types of deviant behavior include structural functionalism, relegation theory, and labeling theory. Crime statistics are data collected by the government to report criminal activity incidents, and have a number of functions in addition to simply providing awareness of the scope of criminal activity. According to crime statistics, the country with the highest proportion of the population in prison is the United States. The reason why the recidivism rate in the United States is relatively high can be explained by the social stigma theory. It can also be found that men are more likely to commit violent crimes than women in crime statistics. Currently, studies on the effects of violent video games on behavior, tattoos, and sexual violence and deviations on college campuses are being conducted.

2. interesting points

It was very interesting that each crime was not analyzed only as an individual case, but that it was possible to know the region, race, gender, country, etc. where crime occurs frequently through crime statistics, and that social deviation could be viewed as a theory from various perspectives.

3. question

Is there an example of an event where the criteria for deviance or not can vary depending on the culture?

Comments

  1. Deviation can be influenced by the cultural context and values of various countries. Examples include costumes and wedding customs. Korea has traditional and conservative dress codes. Conservative characteristics are also revealed when compared to other countries. Therefore, wearing excessive exposure costumes in public places in Korea can be considered a cultural deviation. Marriage is one of the most important events in Korean society. However, among the ever-changing ideas, the form of relationships such as cohabitation and same-sex marriage is still viewed as a deviation that is not easily accepted socially.

  2. I really enjoyed reading your blog post on deviation and cultural norms! Your explanation of formal and informal deviations and how cultural relativity affects the standards of deviation was very clear and informative. I found your discussion on crime statistics particularly interesting, especially how they reveal patterns related to region, race, gender, and country, and how social stigma theory can explain high recidivism rates in the United States.

One suggestion for further improvement would be to delve deeper into specific examples or case studies that illustrate the theories of structural functionalism, relegation theory, and labeling theory in real-world contexts. This could help readers better understand the practical implications of these theories.
